Steelmen Prepare For Trinity

The Steelmen host Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, with the return of three former players catching the headlines in the build-up. In the summer last season's top scorer Leon Mettam jumped ship and joined Trinity along with fellow first team regulars Leon Hibbert and Paul Mayo.

Steve Towers knows he holds one of the keys to victory for Corby Town against Gainsborough Trinity. The midfield man could well find himself up against his former team-mate Leon Hibbert at the heart of the battle as both sides look to get misfiring promotion campaigns back on track in the Blue Square Bet North.

And Towers is in no doubt that who comes out on top in the middle of the park is likely to do the same on the scoreboard.

"I can imagine that playing against Leon in a proper game situation is pretty tough," he said. "I went in against him a few times in training and I think everyone knows what he's like. He's very strong and powerful, that's his game and you know what you're going to be up against.

"We know we've got to match that and hopefully get the ball down and play around him. It's up to myself and Richard Lavery to make sure we win that battle, whoever we're up against. In a sense, it's very much like what we had against Worcester in the cup last weekend because we knew they were strong in midfield and the gaffer told us to make sure we got on top in that middle area.

"It pretty much starts from there in any game and if you can get a foothold in that area, you can control the game and pretty much stop the other side playing. So it's going to very important that we're on our game from the word go."

Hibbert is one of three ex-Steelmen returning to their old haunt tomorrow with last season's top scorer Leon Mettam and defender Paul Mayo also back in town, although whether any of them will start is not certain.

But just the prospect of facing the trio is enough to make the game one to relish." I think the three lads coming back adds a bit of spice to things," continued Towers.

"Everyone knows what all three are like and I know they'll all want to win and Metts will want to score against us. But we're just the same in that we want to make sure we beat them. It's a game we've all been looking forward to and even more so given that we won last week."

That win over Worcester was a timely confidence boost for the Steelmen but Gainsborough also arrive at Rockingham Triangle on the back of a morale-boosting win in the league.

And Towers knows the Lincolnshire side could now be about to put their slow start behind them and start living up to their pre-season billing as promotion contenders.

"They paid a bit of money out in the summer and brought in some good players and I think everyone expected them to have a better start than they have done. But these newly-assembled squads always take time to settle down and you've got to presume that they'll come good at some point because they've got too many good players not to.

"Hopefully though, that won't be this weekend and it's up to us to make sure that's the case. Last week was probably our most accomplished performance. We can still play better, don't get me wrong, but in terms of chances created and being really positive, we were very good.

"It's consistency for us and the last month or so has been a bit indifferent. But that win last week was a real boost for us and hopefully we can keep that going".
