AFC Telford 2-1 Corby Town
Corby Town's interest in the FA Trophy came to an end as they went down 2-1 at AFC Telford this afternoon at The New Bucks Head. The injury-hit Steelmen couldn't be faulted for application but in truth they were second best over the 90 minutes.
The Corby line-up included no less than five changes from the Luton match; with Ben Mackey, Steve Towers, Chris Mackenzie, Asa Charlton and Richard Lavery replaced by Steve Diggin, Andy Burgess, Nathan Thackeray, Liam Green and Liam Dolman respectively.
After an open start to proceedings
Steelmen went in front on 18 minutes when Andy Burgess' corner was glanced in by Nathan Jarman. It wasn't undeserved for the the visitors who, although more direct than their hosts, caused plenty of problems when they went forward.
Telford had their moments in the opening quarter, especially out wide on both flanks, but their final ball let them down too often. That trend continued until the 44th minute when Jon Adams' free-kick found an unmarked Carl Rodgers at the far post, who levelled for the hosts.
Telford were quickly in the ascendancy after the break as the Steelmen began to surrender both territory and possession but there was still a lack of finesse in the final third which was proving costly.
But it looked as though a goal was going to come and midway through the half the hosts' dominance was rewarded when Adams stooped to head Greg Mills' cross into the far corner.
The lead should have been doubled a couple of minutes later only for Andy Brown to see his penalty well saved by Nathan Thackeray.
Ben Mackey was denied at the other end a minute later by Ryan Young but, a few brief flurries aside, that was it for Corby.
