Steelmen Backing England 2018
Today is the day when England will find out whether it's bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup has been a successful one, as the bid team which includes David Beckham, Prince William and David Cameron looks to bring the tournament back to these shores for the first time since 1966.
The local interest is extremely high following Milton Keynes being named as one of the potential host cities and due to our very own new stadium being amoungst those considered as a training base during the tournament. Corby Town FC will be holding it's breath along with the rest of the country awaiting the announcement.
Corby's Rockingham Triangle venue has been put forward as one of the official training camps for the 2018 competition, which could mean an international squad might be based in the town.
Rushden & Diamonds has also struck a deal with Milton Keynes Dons for the Nene Park complex to be used as a training base for stadium:mk.
Corby Council chief executive Chris Mallender said: "The major thing we've got is we've been put forward as a training camp for the 2018 World Cup. Squads would be given the chance to be based at Rockingham Triangle to train, so we could even end up having Brazil here."
Mr Mallender said Corby had initially supported Leicester's unsuccessful bid to be named as a training camp, in a similar way to Rushden's alliance with Milton Keynes. Once Leicester had its bid turned down there was an open invitation sent out to clubs, councils and venues to get their private bid in.
Mr Mallender added: "We're thinking about putting dormitory sleeping arrangements in the new Rockingham Triangle facility. Obviously we don't expect the players to be staying here but the support staff could."
The venue will be listed side by side with the likes of Premier League training grounds in documents supplied to every team who qualify for the last 32 stage of the World Cup. The squads would then be asked to select training camps to use during their time in the tournament.
